Watford’s shirt sleeve sponsor for the 2021-22 season will be cryptocurrency Dogecoin, The Athletic can exclusively reveal.
The deal — a collaboration with main shirt sponsors Stake.com — will be worth in the region of £700,000 to the Premier League newcomers and could break their previous sleeve partnership with Bitcoin of £1 million if it gains global traction.
It’s a controversial choice, to say the least.
Dogecoin was originally devised in 2013 as a joke to poke fun at the speculative rise and fall of the new wave of digital currencies. The word Doge (a slang term for dog) comes from an internet meme of a picture of a Shiba Inu dog surrounded by multi-coloured words representing its imaginary thoughts.
