From Elon Musk’s favourite Dogecoin to Gen Z-term ‘Cheugy’, 2021’s most mispronounced words https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/12/13/from-elon-musks-favourite-dogecoin-to-gen-z-term-cheugy-2021s-most-mispronounced-words/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/12/13/from-elon-musks-favourite-dogecoin-to-gen-z-term-cheugy-2021s-most-mispronounced-words/#respond Mon, 13 Dec 2021 10:10:52 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/12/13/from-elon-musks-favourite-dogecoin-to-gen-z-term-cheugy-2021s-most-mispronounced-words/

Cheugy” is apparently a lot to chew on. Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce have something in common – broadcasters butcher their names.

And virtually everyone is having trouble with “omicron.”

All four made it onto this year’s list of most mispronounced words as compiled by the U.S. Captioning Company, which captions and subtitles real-time events on TV and in courtrooms.

The list released Tuesday identifies the words that proved most challenging for newsreaders and people on television to pronounce this year.

The caption company said it surveyed its members to generate the list, which is now in its sixth year and was commissioned by Babbel, a language-learning platform with headquarters in Berlin and New York.

“Newscasters in the U.S. have struggled with 2021′s new words and names while reporting on key sporting events, viral internet trends and emerging celebrities,” said Esteban Touma, a standup comedian and teacher for Babbel Live.

“As a language teacher, it’s always interesting to see that some of these terms are usually new colloquialisms, or are rooted or borrowed from another language,” he said. “As a non-native speaker, I must confess it’s fun to see English speakers stumbling a bit for a change.”

Here’s how Touma breaks down the proper pronunciations for the most commonly misspoken words:

– Cheugy (CHOO-gee): A trendy term popularized by Gen Z and used to mock an outdated and unfashionable aesthetic typically associated with millennials, such as “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.

– Chipotle (chih-POHT-lay): The American fast food chain became the center of a viral trend this year challenging Baby Boomers to pronounce the name.

– Dalgona (tal-goh-NAH): A Korean treat made with melted sugar and baking soda, popularized in Netflix’s “Squid Game.” (Touma notes that some speakers seem to produce a “K” instead of the “G” in the middle syllable.)

Dogecoin (DOHJ-coin): A divisive cryptocurrency that began somewhat ironically before being popularized by Elon Musk, causing its value to dramatically increase.

– Eilish (EYE-lish): The singer Billie Eilish, whose album “Happier Than Ever” was released this year to critical acclaim and nominated for the Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year.

– Ethereum (ih-THEE-ree-um): Another cryptocurrency that skyrocketed in value this year amid the decentralized-currency boom.

– Ever Given (EV-er GIV-en): The name of the ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, costing billions of dollars in lost trade. Many newscasters mistook the name of the ship as “Evergreen,” the name of the company that owns the vessel, which was printed on its hull.

– Glasgow (GLAHZ-go): The host city of November’s United Nations Climate Conference was mispronounced by both President Joe Biden and former president Barack Obama.

– Kelce (KELs): The Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce revealed on radio this year that his teammates and the media had been mispronouncing his name for years.

– Omicron (AH-muh-kraan / OH-mee-kraan): A new variant of COVID-19 first identified in November, named in keeping with the World Health Organization’s system of identifying variants with Greek letters. (Touma notes it’s pronounced differently in the U.S. and the U.K.)

– Shein (SHEE-in): The Chinese fast fashion company at the center of the “Shein haul” trend, in which participants record themselves trying on numerous different outfits from the company.

– Stefanos Tsitsipas (STEH-fuh-nohs TSEE-tsee-pas): Currently ranked as the world’s No. 4 tennis player, the Greek athlete rose to international prominence when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open in June.

– Yassify (YEAH-sih-fai): A popular trend in which multiple beauty filters are applied to well-known pictures or portraits for comic effect.

Omicron, Tsitsipas and cryptocurrency Dogecoin have made it on to a list of the year’s most mispronounced words.

The US Captioning Company – which produces subtitles for live TV – surveyed its members to produce a rundown of the words that television presenters and newsreaders have been getting woefully wrong.

The list is now in its sixth year and was commissioned by Babbel, a language-learning platform with headquarters in Berlin and New York.

“Newscasters in the US have struggled with 2021′s new words and names while reporting on key sporting events, viral internet trends and emerging celebrities,” said Esteban Touma, a stand-up comedian and teacher for Babbel Live.

Here’s how to get your mouth around some of the most challenging words – and what they mean.

Cheugy (CHOO-gee): A Generation Z term to mock outdated and unfashionable things, or someone who’s trying too hard, and is often used to poke fun at Millennials.

Chipotle (chih-POHT-lay): The US fast food chain started a viral trend this year by challenging people to pronounce the name.

Dalgona (tal-goh-NAH): A Korean treat made with melted sugar and baking soda, as seen in hit show Squid Game.

Dogecoin (DOHJ-coin): Despite having an image of a dog as its logo, the cryptocurrency’s name isn’t so straightforward.

Eilish (EYE-lish): She may be one of the world’s biggest stars, but Billie Eilish’s name is still causing a problem for some TV presenters.

Ethereum (ih-THEE-ree-um): Another cryptocurrency with another tricky name.

Glasgow (GLAHZ-go): This may seem a strange one, but the COP26 host city may be a challenge for some outside the UK, with President Biden and Barack Obama apparently struggling to say it correctly.

Kelce (KELs): NFL player Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles said this year that his teammates and the media had been mispronouncing his name for years.

Omicron (AH-muh-kraan / OH-mee-kraan): A new variant of COVID-19 first identified in November, named in keeping with the World Health Organisation’s system of identifying variants with Greek letters. (The strain is pronounced differently in the US and the UK).

Shein (SHEE-in): A popular Chinese “fast fashion” company.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (STEH-fuh-nohs TSEE-tsee-pas): The Greek tennis player, ranked fourth in the world, is one of the game’s brightest young stars and reached the French Open final in June.

Yassify (YEAH-sih-fai): A trend in which multiple beauty filters are applied to famous pictures or portraits for comic effect.

Cardano’s partnership with Ethiopia named among 2021’s ‘most influential’ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/27/cardanos-partnership-with-ethiopia-named-among-2021s-most-influential/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/27/cardanos-partnership-with-ethiopia-named-among-2021s-most-influential/#respond Wed, 27 Oct 2021 08:18:50 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/27/cardanos-partnership-with-ethiopia-named-among-2021s-most-influential/

The Cardano network has garnered the interest of many cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Thanks to not only its network upgrades, but also the vast use cases it keeps trying to employ within its blockchain. The network’s increasing interest in Africa is especially notable since it first began to venture into the continent earlier this year.

One project that has grabbed eyeballs is its development arm Input Output HK’s identity management solution, Atala Prism. The technology is in the news now after it was recognized on the Project Management Institute’s list of most influential projects for 2021.

The Pennsylvania-based organization for project and product management experts placed Atala Prism in the 14th position. IOHK had announced a partnership with Ethiopia’s Minister of Education earlier this year in order to develop a blockchain-powered system. It is aimed at monitoring students’ performance in local schools. This then culminated into a national digital database called Atala Prism.

In an interview with PMI, Input Output’s Director of African Operations John O’Connor noted that the project can be further expanded to integrate learning management systems.

“In the future, we may also integrate learning management systems, so students can use the system to figure out what homework they need to do—and do it on the tablet.”

While the project is due to be launched next year, the recognition it received from blockchain enthusiasts had led to Cardano planning to propose a blockchain solution for a national ID system to the Ethiopian government.

Cardano is also intensely lobbying leaders of other African nations for the creation of similar solutions in their countries. The Cardano Co-founder has embarked on an African tour to expand his network’s base in the continent through such partnerships.

He will be meeting with heads of countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Burundi, and the self-governing state of Zanzibar. Hoskinson even posted pictures of his meeting with the latter’s 8th president Hussein Ali Mwinyi.

The CEO will also be meeting with representatives from the startups that are building on Cardano on the continent. Cardano’s increasing ambitions in Africa have further been supported by the creation of its commercial arm EMURGO’s African wing, along with the announcement of a $100 million fund.

With African startups already partnering with the network through its various arms, Cardano’s commitment towards Africa might turn out to be fruitful for the continent.
