Moderna (MRNA) Shares Drop 8% despite Impressive Result from Cancer Vaccine Phase 2 Trial  https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/04/18/moderna-mrna-shares-drop-8-despite-impressive-result-from-cancer-vaccine-phase-2-trial/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/04/18/moderna-mrna-shares-drop-8-despite-impressive-result-from-cancer-vaccine-phase-2-trial/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 08:27:49 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/04/18/moderna-mrna-shares-drop-8-despite-impressive-result-from-cancer-vaccine-phase-2-trial/

With the second phase concluded, the Phase 3 melanoma trial will begin soon.

Biotechnology company Moderna Inc (NASDAQ: MRNA) experienced shares decline on Monday as an update on its cancer vaccine hit Wall Street. Moderna lost more than 8% after it released new trial results on the personalized cancer vaccine, which it is developing with another pharmaceutical company Merck & Co Inc (NYSE: MRK). While MRNA closed down, Merck also shed 0.26% to close at $115.01.

How come Moderna shares plunged despite the company announcing promising data from its cancer vaccine trial? Both companies announced the first presentation of details results from the Phase 2b KEYNOTE-942/mRNA-4157-P201 trial evaluating mRNA-4157 (V940), in combination with Merck’s anti-PD-1 therapy in patients suffering from stage III/1V skin cancer melanoma. According to the findings, combining the Moderna cancer vaccine with Merck’s blockbuster drug Keytruda reduces the risk of melanoma recurrence by 44% compared with administering Keytruda alone. Additionally, almost 80% of participants who received the Moderna vaccine and Keytruda were cancer-free for 18 months. This is compared with 62% of the participants who only got Keytruda.

Moderna Cancer Vaccine Combined with KEYTRUDA Shows Promising Data

M.D. Moderna’s Senior Vice President and Head of Development, Therapeutics and Oncology, Dr. Kyle Holen, commented on the motivating results. He said the results encourage the mRNA’s potential “as an individualized neoantigen therapy” to positively impact patients with high-risk resected melanoma. The Dr. explained that the Moderna vaccine combined with Keytruda could be the solution to extending patients’ lives. With the second phase concluded, the Phase 3 melanoma trial will begin soon. Holen also mentioned testing expansion into lung cancer and beyond.

Also, the senior president, head of global clinical development, and chief medical officer at Merck Research Laboratories Dr. Eliav Barr, talked about the results of the latest trial.

“Data from KEYNOTE-942 provide evidence for the potential of mRNA-4147 (V940) in combination with KEYTRUDA to improve recurrence-free survival when given to patients with resected high-risk melanoma. These data support the potential of mRNA-4157 (V940) in combination with KEYTRUDA to help fight melanoma earlier and warrant investigation of the combination in a larger Phase 3 trial. We look forward to studying mRNA-4157 (V940) and KEYTRUDA in a variety of other early-stage cancers.”

Following the trial results, the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation and the PRIME scheme, respectively, for mRNA-4157 (V940) in combination with KEYTRUDA for the adjuvant treatment of patients with high-risk melanoma after complete resection.

While a part of Wall Street becomes optimistic about the Moderna cancer vaccine in combination with Keytruda, some are skeptical. Although analysts from SVB Securities agree that the results show that the vaccine has potential, they had some reservations. The analysts added that the treatment method is new and untested. Hence, they noted that the firm does not believe accelerated approval is an option. On the other hand, Tim Anderson of Wolfe Research wrote that Moderna and Merck’s stakeholders are “cautiously optimistic at best.”

Pfizer Closes $43B Acquisition Deal with Cancer Drug Maker Seagen https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/03/13/pfizer-closes-43b-acquisition-deal-with-cancer-drug-maker-seagen/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/03/13/pfizer-closes-43b-acquisition-deal-with-cancer-drug-maker-seagen/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2023 15:52:11 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2023/03/13/pfizer-closes-43b-acquisition-deal-with-cancer-drug-maker-seagen/

Pfizer has been on an acquisition spree as it seeks to cushion the impact of a projected $17 billion revenue drop by 2030.

Pfizer Inc (NYSE: PFE) has closed a $43 billion deal to acquire biotechnology company Seagen Inc and its leading line of cancer drugs. The deal comes as revenue from Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine and pill hits record lows and is the largest in the biopharmaceutical giant’s recent string of acquisitions.  With the deal, Pfizer adds to its cancer treatment cache four approved therapies which brought in a combined total of almost $2 billion in 2022.

Pfizer will pay $229 in cash for each Seagen share, a 32.7% premium to Friday’s closing price and nearly a 42% premium to the stock’s close on February 24, a day before news of a possible deal broke. Seagen’s shares rose to $207 in pre-market trading on Monday as Pfizer shares fell 2.9% to $38.25.

Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla said the company was “deploying its financial resources to advance the battle against cancer,” adding that cancer treatment continued to be “the largest growth driver in global medicine.” As such, the Seagen deal, according to Bourla, is in line with Pfizer’s near and long-term financial goals. The company already has 24 approved cancer drugs with 33 programs in clinical development.

The pharmaceutical giant has been on an acquisition spree as it seeks to cushion the impact of a projected $17 billion revenue drop by 2030 due to patent expirations for top drugs and a decline in demand for its Covid vaccine and pill products. Seagen on the other hand has a projected revenue of $2.2 billion, a 12% increase year on year. The drug maker expects more than $10 billion in “risk-adjusted” sales from Seagen in 2030.

In a research note, Wells Fargo analyst Mohit Bansal wrote:

“While Pfizer still has more firepower to do deals, we think integrating such a large company could make (Pfizer) take a pause on M&A front.”

Many pharmaceutical companies have not expressed much interest in making cheap purchases despite the marked drop in biotech stocks over the past year. They have instead opted for low-risk acquisitions with drugs either approved for the market or close to receiving approval.

Doge, who went viral 12 years ago, becoming a classic internet meme, has fallen ill with cancer at 17-years-old.

The famous internet meme Doge, AKA Kabosu, has fallen ill with cancer at 17.

If you’ve been on the internet at all in the past 12 years, you’ll have seen the Doge meme at some point. It’s a Shiba Inu dog that went viral after its owner shared several photos on her personal blog, one of which had Doge on the sofa with its eyebrows raised, looking suspicious. It faded out somewhat alongside the top and bottom text, Impact font meme format of the early 2010s, unfortunately resurfacing as Doge Coin (a cryptocurrency). However, there is a Doge curator on Steam that you may have also seen.

As reported by Dexerto, Doge turned 17 in November, and only a month later, their owner took to their blog (where she posts regular updates about Kabosu), to share a tragic update. “Kabosu’s disease names are acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma lukemia. Right now, the liver level is very bad and jaundice appears.”

Atsuko Sato has shared some optimistic words, however, saying that “antibiotics will definitely improve” and that “Kabosu has an apetite. She can also drink water”. This is a good sign, as many fans highlight in the comments. “It’s gonna be [alright], you have the world praying for you, stay strong Kabosu!” one account commented.

Others shared sentiments such as, “Be strong” and “Here’s hoping that Kabosu gets well soon!” While many others shared the photo that sent Doge into virality in the first place, celebrating a piece of early internet meme history in wake of such upsetting news.

She also posted an update about Doge’s health on Instagram in the first-person, from Doge’s perspective, “I had a blood test at the hospital today. I got a call from the doctor in the evening, I was told it was very dangerous. I didn’t expect it to be so bad. My mind went blank.”

And in a later update, Atsuko Sato addressed everyone’s support, “To all of you who are worried, Thank you very much”.

A Shiba Inu who earned global fame for starring in a viral meme is sick with leukemia and liver disease, her owner says.

In a series of Instagram posts this week, Atsuko Sato, a teacher who lives in Japan, said the 17-year-old pooch was in “a very dangerous condition” after being diagnosed with acute cholangiohepatitis, a type of inflammation in the digestive system, and chronic lymphoma leukemia, a blood cancer.

“Right now, the liver level is very bad and jaundice appears,” Sato wrote in one caption. “But antibiotics will definitely improve.”

The dog, known by the name “Kabosu,” had stopped eating and drinking over the weekend but was beginning to get her energy back, Sato said.

Kabosu, a rescue dog, became an internet sensation after social media users began resharing a photo posted to Sato’s personal blog in 2010.

Kabosu’s smirking face, side eyes and crossed paws were a hit online, often overlaid with comic sans text depicting what might be her inner dialogue. Users began referring to the image as “doge” and a global meme was born.

According to internet lore, the term “doge” first appeared in a 2005 episode of “Homestar Runner,” an animated web-based comedy series.

But the misspelled moniker took on another meaning in 2013 with the emergence of a titularly-branded cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.

The currency — which was supposed to be a joke — spiked in value years later when Elon Musk, the richest man on earth at the time, tweeted “Dogecoin is the people’s currency” and “no highs, no lows, only Doge.”

Kabosu’s legacy has only continued to grow, transcending internet culture to appear on pastries, ads for the Stockholm subway and the jerseys of professional athletes.

In 2021, the iconic image of Kabosu sold as an NFT for a record $4 million.

On Instagram, Kabosu’s owner thanked the dog’s fans for the outpouring of support, saying the pair were “getting power from all over the world.”
