All four made it onto this year’s list of most mispronounced words as compiled by the U.S. Captioning Company, which captions and subtitles real-time events on TV and in courtrooms.

The list released Tuesday identifies the words that proved most challenging for newsreaders and people on television to pronounce this year.

The caption company said it surveyed its members to generate the list, which is now in its sixth year and was commissioned by Babbel, a language-learning platform with headquarters in Berlin and New York.

“Newscasters in the U.S. have struggled with 2021′s new words and names while reporting on key sporting events, viral internet trends and emerging celebrities,” said Esteban Touma, a standup comedian and teacher for Babbel Live.

“As a language teacher, it’s always interesting to see that some of these terms are usually new colloquialisms, or are rooted or borrowed from another language,” he said. “As a non-native speaker, I must confess it’s fun to see English speakers stumbling a bit for a change.”

Here’s how Touma breaks down the proper pronunciations for the most commonly misspoken words:

DOGECOIN: WHAT’S BEHIND THE SURGE?

— Cheugy (CHOO-gee): A trendy term popularized by Gen Z and used to mock an outdated and unfashionable aesthetic typically associated with millennials, such as “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.

Major coins, including Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), showed strength Sunday evening as the global cryptocurrency market cap rose 3.65% to $2.56 trillion.

What Happened: BTC traded 4.47% higher $57,218.96 over 24 hours. For the week, it has fallen 1.95%.

The second-largest coin by market cap, Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), traded 4.82% higher at $4,289.99 over 24 hours. Over a seven-day period, it has risen 1.29%.

Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) was up 0.96% at $0.2066 over 24 hours. For the week, it has fallen 7.9%.

Rival meme coin Shiba Inu was largely flat, trading 0.04% higher over 24 hours at $0.00003897. For the week, it has declined 11.04%.

The top 24-hour gainers on Sunday evening, as per CoinMarketCap data were The Sandbox, Terra, and Wax, among the top 100 coins. Sandbox spiked 15.47% higher to $7.52, Terra rose 14.97% to $50.13 and Wax was up 10.79% to $0.7824.

Why It Matters: Fears over the COVID-19 variant Omicron plummeted risk assets including the apex coin on Friday. 

“We’ll no doubt learn more in the days and weeks ahead but for now, fear of the unknown will weigh heavily going into the weekend and could carry over into next week,” wrote Craig Erlam, a senior market analyst for OANDA.

Alternative’s “Crypto Fear & Greed Index” signaled “Fear” at press time. Last week, the index was at “Neutral.”

BTC touched an intraday low of $53,576.74 and rebounded nearly 8% from those levels at press time. A similar story was repeated in ETH, which fell below the psychologically important $4,000 mark to $3,989.97 in intraday trading and rebounded smartly by nearly 9% after Asia awakened to a new trading week.

Cryptocurrency Twitter was quick to take note of both the dip in the digital assets and their rebound.

Alex Mashinsky, CEO of Celsius Network said he purchased nearly $10 million worth of BTC and ETH on Sunday. He said that BTC might retest $53K levels, while ETH may see $4K as “short term bottoms.”

On Sunday, MicroStrategy Inc (NASDAQ:MSTR) CEO Michael Saylor said in a tweet that the future “does not belong to the fainthearted.” He included the hashtag “Bitcoin” in his post.

Among the dip buyers on Sunday was the nation of El Salvador, which purchased an additional 100 BTC, as per its President Nayib Bukele.

The cryptocurrency market is witnessing a decline after the first case of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus was confirmed in the American state in California. The world’s largest cryptocurrencies are showing a downward trend. In the last few days, the price of Ethereum has fallen by more than 5 per cent. If experts are to be believed, due to the emergence of the Omicron variant, there may be a further decline in these cryptocurrencies.

According to CoinGecko, global cryptocurrency market capitalisation has tripped marginally to $2.76 trillion. While other cryptocurrencies like Litecoin, Uniswap, XRP and Polkadot saw their fortunes dip, the likes of Solana, Polygon, Terra were seen to be making gains in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, media reports said that top executives of eight major cryptocurrency firms will be testifying before the US House Financial Services Committee within a week from today. This would be the first time the cryptocurrency players will be presenting their views amid global concerns and apprehensions with regard to digital currency.

El Salvador continues to keep its commitment to its Bitcoin strategy. The country which is currently the only sovereign nation to use a cryptocurrency as a legal tender has been making strides when it comes to its investment in Bitcoin.

Not too long ago, El Salvador had made another bitcoin purchase that brought its total to 1,120 BTC being held by the country. This was a continuation of the promise President Nayib Bukele had made on “Bitcoin Day” to increase the country’s holdings in the asset as time goes on. Staying on theme, the country has once again made another bitcoin purchase when the market is down and bought the dip.

El Salvador Adds 100 BTC

President Nayib Bukele took to Twitter to announce the most recent Bitcoin purchase made by the government of El Salvador. In the tweet, the president said that the country had bought an additional 100 BTC at a “discount.” The discount being referred to is the downtrend that bitcoin has been in following its touch of a new all-time high at $69,000.

The discovery of a new COVID variant which had been reported by South African scientists had once again rocked financial markets globally. COVID had first laid waste to financial markets when countries had had to go into lockdowns to protect citizens from the virus. The markets had subsequently recovered but the impact at the time had been significant for the markets.

This time around, with the discovery of the Omicron COVID variant, Bitcoin had fallen about 20%. However, according to President Nayib Bukele, this presented the country an opportunity to purchase the digital asset at a 20% ‘discount’.

Bukele Strikes Back At Bank of England

Bank of England’s Chief Andrew Bailey had slammed El Salvador’s decision to accept Bitcoin as legal tender recently. Bailey had expressed concern over the dual currency system currently in operation in the country but mostly focused on the country’s adoption of bitcoin. The bank chief explained that the volatility of the digital asset could negatively affect the country.

President Nayib Bukele had taken to Twitter to address the concerns raised by the chief over the weekend. In the sarcastic response, the president mocked the chief, saying that “I guess Bank of England’s interest in the well-being of our people is genuine.”

Despite criticisms following its adoption of bitcoin as legal tender in the country, El Salvador has not backed down on its mission. The latest development is plans to build a “Bitcoin City” that has no income or capital gains tax. Also, El Salvador has been successfully mining bitcoin using volcanic energy since October.

Diamond Cash (DCASH) became the biggest gainer in the last 24 hours, clocking an increase of 1,739.27 per cent; it was trading at $0.06993 at 8:30 am. Ever Rise (RISE) lost the most in the last 24 hours, falling 99.63 per cent, and was trading at $0.000000002077.

Major meme coins such as Dogecoin (DOGE) and rival Shiba Inu (SHIB) have witnessed a huge rise in the last 24 hours. Prices of Dogelon Mars (ELON) and Samoyedcoin (SAMO) also increased, according to coinmarketcap.com.

Dogelon Mars (ELON) has risen by 12.89 per cent in the last 24 hours and was trading at $0.000001571, while Samoyedcoin (SAMO) was trading at $0.0694 and recorded a rise of 9.61 per cent in the last 24 hours, according to coinmarketcap.com.
