The memecoin phenomenon didn’t prove as effective in the last month’s start of year crypto market rally, as the gains of the top cryptocurrencies in this category barely outperformed Bitcoin. The monthly gain of BTC stood at 44.5%, while the top two meme-based coins DOGE and SHIB gained 27% and 40.7%, respectively.
Dogecoin is losing its popularity as its most prominent supporter Elon Musk is reportedly developing an independent Twitter Coin instead of integrating his favorite cryptocurrency with the social media platform owned by the entrepreneur.
For the greater part of 2022, DOGE/USD performed poorly except for when Elon Musk acquired Twitter. The acquisition raised hopes in the Dogecoin community about increased cryptocurrency usage.
However, without any tangible announcements or reports from Twitter hinting at Dogecoin usage, the 100% price surge from October 2022 reversed in the following two months. The Google search volume for the token has also subsided since Q1 2022.

However, without any tangible announcements or reports from Twitter hinting at Dogecoin usage, the 100% price surge from October 2022 reversed in the following two months. The Google search volume for the token has also subsided since Q1 2022.
Another factor influencing the price of DOGE last year was the launch of Dogechain. An EVM-compatible blockchain that uses DOGE as the gas-paying token. However, Dogechain failed to gain user traction, becoming a place mainly for “shitcoin” trading. Currently, less than 1% of DOGE is bridged on Dogechain.
Lastly, the on-chain data for Dogecoin suggests that the price may be overpriced. The Network Value to Transaction Value (NVT) ratio metric is a price-to-earning ratio equivalent for the cryptocurrency markets. The metric measures the ratio of the market capitalization of the token against its transaction volume. Higher transaction volume compared to the market value corresponds to low NVT readings.
Coinmetrics’ historic NVT chart of Dogecoin suggests that the token could be overpriced. For the last eight years, the NFT ratio has oscillated between 10 and 100, with a few outliers during bull markets. Dogecoin’s NVT metric hasn’t tapped the bottom of its long-term range since mid-2021, which exposes it to more downside risk.
The internet’s first and most favorite meme coin would require a catalyst like a tweet from Elon Musk, or drastic change in the token’s tokenomics or fundamentals to revive a positive run in the short-term.

Dogecoin has been trading in a range between $0.07 and $0.19 since June 2019. A breakout from the range could see continued momentum in the direction of the breakout.

Like Dogecoin, the weakening meme coin narrative affected the buying strength of Shiba Inu. The second largest meme coin has been working on enhancing the brand value of Shiba Inu by forming partnerships with clothing brands like Bugatti Group and English designer John Richmond.
The Google Trend score of Shiba Inu shows a similar depressing pattern since early 2022 as Dogecoin, with no spikes in search volume since the crypto bull mania of 2021 subsided in Q1 2022.
Like Dogecoin, the Shiba community also has an independent blockchain, Shibarium, which is owned by the Shiba community. However, the blockchain’s gas-paying token is BONE instead of SHIB, which brings no real value to the token holders of SHIB.
The total balance of SHIB on crypto exchanges jumped earlier in January, which is a negative sign, exposing the token to more sell-offs. On the contrary, the smart money wallets identified by Nansen increased their holdings slightly on Jan. 25, which may add some strength to the recent rally.
On a weekly time-frame, the token is trading between $0.00000825 and $0.00001794. A breakout from this range will likely see a strong move in the direction of the breakout. The midpoint of the range at $0.00001200 is also acting as a resistance level for buyers.

While the top meme tokens have seen fading momentum, Floki Inu and Solana’s BONK token had impressive runs in January thanks to an SOL price rise and tokenomics improvement with Floki Inu. The Floki community voted to burn $100 million worth of FLOKI tokens, which nearly doubled its price on Jan. 29.
Generally, it appears that the meme coin phenomenon from 2021 has lost its steam considerably. While the meme coins are moving with the rest of the market, their performance has been average. Improvements in the projects by the team or community have become essential to push these tokens back up.

The Bitcoin price rally has stalled for five days now. After BTC experienced a furious surge from $21,000 to $23,000 last Friday, the price is now in a consolidation phase. The reasons for this are diverse.
As NewsBTC reported, Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) on a daily basis is showing severe overheating. The technical indicator reveals that the BTC price is in heavily oversold conditions.
During the recent upward movement, the daily RSI was near 90 at times but has since cooled to 78 at press time. The stalling of the BTC price at $23,000 could therefore signal a healthy consolidation and a reset before a new price rally could be on the cards.
Another key factor for the Bitcoin price in recent weeks has been its correlation with the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) and the S&P 500. Generally speaking, a weakening dollar is bullish for risk assets like Bitcoin and the S&P 500.
However, the weekly chart of the DXY reveals that the dollar index is still holding above its weekly support at 101, which experts consider an extremely crucial support level.
If the DXY breaks below this mark, things would be extremely bullish for the Bitcoin price. However, due to the still-standing support, the euphoria among risk investors may have also come to a halt for the moment.

The next FOMC meeting of the U.S. central bank will take place in just one week, on February 1, and will probably set the course for another bull or bear trend.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, 98.2% currently assume that the Fed will further reduce its rate hike pace and raise only 25 basis points. But statements from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will also be crucial.
Thomas Lee of Fundstrat Global Advisors assesses that inflation has “literally hit the wall” since October and that core inflation is not “sticky,” contrary to the Fed’s initial expectations. According to Lee, the bearish sentiment in the stock market in December was triggered by an “unforced error” by the Fed and led to the FOMC saying inflation was hotter in December.
As a result, Fundstrat expects the FOMC to make a “course correction” in February, meaning financial conditions will loosen and the VIX will fall, which in turn will drive risk assets higher.
However, Lance Roberts, chief strategist at RIA Advisors, warns that the Fed doesn’t like the current rally in financial markets and will therefore take appropriate action.
The Fed really isn’t going to like the bulls running markets up and easing financial conditions this much. Don’t be surprised if Powell smacks the market again at the upcoming FOMC meeting.
On the other hand, Fed Governor Chris Waller recently came out in favor of a 25 basis point rate hike at the next FOMC meeting, thus solidifying expectations for the February FOMC meeting, as reported by Nick Timiraos of the Wall Street Journal aka the “Fed’s mouthpiece.”
As the chief economics correspondent wrote via Twitter, Waller made it clear that the Fed would not make a risk management mistake similar to the one it made in 2021 when it stuck to its forecast for persistent disinflation. Waller said, “this is different from 2021 because it’s easier for the Fed to cut if it’s wrong.”
“In other words, Waller sees the risk of having overtightened because inflation comes down quickly as a first-class problem,” Timiraos said.
For Bitcoin’s price, the indication of an upcoming pivot and a 25 basis point hike would be a powerful reason for a new rally. At press time, the BTC price stood at $22,622.

Input Output (IO) CEO Charles Hoskinson shut down claims that Cardano operates within a “hush-hush culture.”
Hoskinson spoke out after developer Adam Dean publicly said the Vasil testnet is “catastrophically broken.” Meanwhile, Sebastien Guillemot shed light on his company culture experience and said Cardano devs are muzzled when talking about development roadblocks.
However, in a live stream posted shortly after Dean’s tweet, Hoskinson said there had been an “unfair narrative” spun over testnet issues.
Specifically, Guillemot voiced his frustrations with an alleged “hush-hush culture” surrounding his work on the Vasil upgrade. The developer said even the suggestion of an issue “leads to a multi-day panic.”
We have such a hush-hush culture that even hinting at some test network issue leads to a multi-day panic. Meanwhile in Ethereum, devs can just honestly talk about their software https://t.co/cYEY6dNp8o
— Sebastien Guillemot (@SebastienGllmt) August 23, 2022
His comments came in response to a post by Ethereum dev Péter Szilágyi, who openly admitted the latest Geth 1.10.22 release is “borked.”
Countering Guillemot, Hoskinson denied a “hush-hush culture” exists, accusing the developer of “wanting to kick up dust for no apparent reason.”
Backing up his rebuttal, the Cardano founder said open issues are listed on Github for all to see. And direction communication channels are available via Discord. He later added that having technical and quality assurance discussions on Twitter, Reddit, and Telegram “serves no purpose and just harms progress.”
The Vasil upgrade was delayed for a second time on July 28 after discovering three separate bugs. At the time, Hoskinson commented that the latest 1.35.3 version is likely the one to survive the hard fork and upgrade to Vasil and added that the upgrade rollout would not take much longer.
However, on August 18, Dean posted a tweet thread detailing how the Vasil testnet is “catastrophically broken.” The developer said rushed delivery revealed incompatible forks and “a decrease to chain density.”
(1/n) It’s important to point out today that the #Cardano #Testnet is **catastrophically** broken due to a bug in Cardano Node v 1.35.2. This was the version that we had previously been told was “Tested and Ready” for the Vasil Hardfork. This bug was only discovered…
— Adam Dean (@adamKDean) August 18, 2022
Dean added that the 1.35.3 version is incompatible with most operators, as they had upgraded to the previous version. Moreover, the testing of 1.35.3 is fractured due to the existence of multiple testnets for that software version.
Commenting on this, Hoskinson said the bugs were known about for “quite some time,” and the response deployed was to “roll back” for correction. He added that “all of these things have been resolved,” and heavy testing of version 1.35.3 has given the team a high degree of confidence that the code is solid.
With that, Hoskinson dismissed the narrative that Vasil has quality issues.
