The AMC Theaters mobile app now allows you to pay with Dogecoin, Shiba Inu coin and other cryptocurrencies.

Can you buy movie theater tickets with cryptocurrency?

AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron announced in a tweet that AMC’s new app will allow people to use crypto to buy movie tickets.

  • “Exactly as promised, the AMC mobile app for AMC’s U.S. theatres now accepts online payments using Doge Coin, Shiba Inu, and other crypto currencies — thanks to Bitpay. Also Apple Pay, Google Pay and Paypal,” he tweeted. “To do so, you first will need to update to the latest version of our app.”

AMC previously accepted Dogecoin as payment — but only through digital gift cards that had a cap of $200 per day, according to TechCrunch.

  • The theater company allowed people to use crypto payments for online purchases back in November 2021, too.
  • Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Litecoin (LTC) were all accepted.

Why does AMC accept cryptocurrency?

The recent move by AMC offers another avenue for people to buy their movie theater tickets.

At the same time, this decision acts as a way to align with the recent “meme stock” movement, where people on the internet, as a meme, decided to buy floods of AMC and GameStop stock, hoping to score some money.

“For AMC, it seems to be at least some acknowledgment of the very online people who helped get the brand back in a profitable position, and a pivot to give users more ways (and if we’re being honest, probably a few too many ways) to buy tickets and go to the movies,” according to Paste Magazine.

AMC Theaters Further Embraces Meme Stock Vibes, Adds Dogecoin To Accepted Cryptocurrencies https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2022/04/21/amc-theaters-further-embraces-meme-stock-vibes-adds-dogecoin-to-accepted-cryptocurrencies/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2022/04/21/amc-theaters-further-embraces-meme-stock-vibes-adds-dogecoin-to-accepted-cryptocurrencies/#respond Thu, 21 Apr 2022 15:46:50 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2022/04/21/amc-theaters-further-embraces-meme-stock-vibes-adds-dogecoin-to-accepted-cryptocurrencies/

If you dreamed of riding AMC Theaters and Dogecoin to the moon, we have some good news — they’re joining forces to make it easier than ever to use your crypto wallet to check out a movie on the big screen and choke it all down with popcorn and a soda. The future of movie-going isn’t streaming. Or 3D. Or IMAX. It’s, umm… crypto. Apparently?

As AMC looks to fully embrace its post-Gamestop meme stock place in pop culture, the company is expanding its crypto functions so movie-goers can now use more cryptocurrencies via Bitpay for purchases. Options range from popular coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum to more niche crypto coins, including Shiba Inu and the meme-inspired currency Dogecoin, which itself had a bit of time in the spotlight as Reddit traders aimed to juice the coin’s value in the same meme-driven cycle around Gamestop and AMC stocks.

AMC has been on a wild ride the past year and change, with the theater company on the verge of bankruptcy during the height of the pandemic. With virtually all its theaters closed or limited in capacity and Hollywood continuously delaying its tentpole movies, AMC stock nose-dived to under $3 in late 2020 and early 2021 as theaters sat largely empty for over a year, Tenet excluded, of course. It seems not even a global pandemic could slow the box office powers of Christopher Nolan to make us so hyped and confused we could blissfully forget about the pandemic for a few hours.

But just as the Reddit-fueled meme stock movement took off, pulling Gamestop from the brink of extinction and sticking it to Wall Street traders who had bet on the company to fail, the grassroots trader movement turned its focus to buying up stock in the theater chain. The move floated a company in desperate need of a cash infusion as it tried to hang on and survive the pandemic before eventually reopening when the blockbuster faucet would finally turn back on.

By June 2021, the hype train was rolling, and AMC stocked peaked out at just under $60 per share. Though the company has since stabilized back to around $17 per share, the Reddit-driven hype gave AMC the ability to generate cash and push through the shutdowns. Around the same time, Reddit traders threw some attention at meme stock Dogecoin, the ultimate joke that became an actual form of real-life digital currency. Though Doge’s value peaked wildly for a few days after a tumultuous and breakneck climb to over 50 cents, it’s now leveled back down to around a cent or so in value.

Which brings us back around to AMC, which has added a function in its app for ticket and concession purchases to allow customers to link up their crypto wallets and use various coins for said purchases. The expansion of coins available to use comes after AMC began allowing customers to make purchases with Bitcoin and Ethereum late last year in what now seems to be the first wave of one of the oldest entertainment technologies embracing one of the most unpredictable and cutting-edge forms of tech development.

Put simply, things are just getting kind of weird.

It’s always interesting to see how an aging industry tries to adapt and survive. But anyone who has walked across a sticky movie theater floor, had a kid kick the back of their seat for two hours, squinted across the glare of someone’s phone two rows down, and sat in a broken cloth rocking chair emanating the faint aroma of old Milk Duds and body odor can likely attest it’s not the lack of crypto options at the checkout kiosk keeping people from coming back to theaters. Making more ways to pay probably can’t hurt, but the experience itself needs to be reevaluated from the ground up. That’s the problem. Going to a movie already costs a lot. If you have to pay at least make it a more premium experience. There’s a reason Alamo Drafthouse is opening new theaters, even in 2022. Don’t give us crypto, just make the experience good.

For the average movie-goer, all of this is probably just a weird bit of trivia as they look to snag a matinee ticket to Morbius or dive into the multiverse of Everything Everywhere All at Once. For AMC, it seems to be at least some acknowledgment of the very online people who helped get the brand back in a profitable position, and a pivot to give users more ways (and if we’re being honest, probably a few too many ways) to buy tickets and go to the movies.

For folks who jumped into the Dogecoin rush in the hope of riding the nebulous crypto chaos into becoming a millionaire … well, at least now maybe you can convert that pile of languishing Dogecoin into a few movie tickets and a refillable popcorn bucket. Though there’s always the lingering fear you’ll look back in a decade or so and realize you’re now the equivalent of the guy who spent 10,000 Bitcoin to order a few pizzas back in 2010. Bitcoin that would’ve been worth around $400 million today. Gulp.

Those of you who bought Dogecoin as a joke can use them towards movie tickets at AMC. The largest movie theater chain in the U.S., AMC Theaters, has been openly pro-crypto, and the CEO recently announced its mobile app will now accept Dogecoin (DOGE), Shibu Inu (SHIB), and other cryptocurrencies.

The names of the other newly supported cryptocurrencies are yet to be revealed. TechCrunch has reached out for a comment and will update this if they get back to us.

In the tweet, Aron revealed that customers in the U.S. can update the latest version of the AMC Theatres iOS and Android mobile apps to use crypto payments via integration with BitPay.

Dogecoin was accepted by AMC Theaters in October 2021, but only through digital gift cards (up to $200 per day). Its plans to begin accepting crypto were announced in August, however, it wasn’t until January 6, 2022, when the CEO of AMC Theatres, Adam Aron, promised users via a tweet to include meme tokens DOGE and SHIB by March. While delayed, the company delivered, appeasing the impatient Dogecoin fans.

The company first started accepting crypto payments back in November, which allowed customers to purchase movie tickets online using Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and Litecoin (LTC). After the announcement, social media erupted with Dogecoin fans demanding the meme cryptocurrency be accepted as well. Aron tweeted a poll, asking whether or not they would use DOGE to make purchases at AMC. More than two-thirds voted yes.

According to Aron, crypto payments accounted for 14% of total online transactions.

Paying for popcorn and tickets using DOGE is simple, for the most part. All you have to do is select Bitpay as your payment method once you have added your AMC tickets to your cart. Then you just connect your crypto wallet or get an address where you can send your chosen cryptocurrency.

According to the CEO of the company Adam Aron, the innovation was made possible thanks to the BitPay cryptocurrency processing service.

In order for the new feature to appear, you need to update the mobile application to the latest version.

AMC Theaters is one of the largest film distribution networks in the US and Europe. It owns over 950 cinemas and 10,500 screens worldwide. It also operates its own online cinema.

In September 2021, the head of the cinema chain launched a survey to add support for Dogecoin. Twitter users supported the idea – in October, the company integrated the payment of gift cards using meme-cryptocurrency.

In the same month, Aron launched a similar survey about adding support for Shiba Inu, a clone of Dogecoin. More than 153,000 people took part in it – the idea was supported by more than 81% of respondents.

In November, AMC Theaters began accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin as a means of online payment. According to Aron, the company will add support for Dogecoin in the future.

As a reminder, in January 2022, AMC Theaters distributed exclusive NFTs to more than 580,000 shareholders.

Leading U.S. movie theater chain AMC has added two meme-inspired cryptocurrencies, Shiba Inu ($SHIB) and Dogecoin ($DOGE) as payment methods, a week before they were scheduled to go live.

The move was announced by AMC’s CEO Adam Aron, who in a tweet shared with his over 240,000 followers detailed the movie theater chain was now accepting both DOGE and SHIB for online payments. The CEO thanks crypto payments processor BitPay for its support.

The company was planning on adding the meme-inspired cryptocurrencies as a payment method by March 19, but the move came ahead of schedule. As CryptoGlobe reported, AMC added bitcoin payments for movie tickets and concessions last year, and at the time said it was exploring “how else AMC can participate in this burgeoning cryptocurrency universe.”

The company first decided to add DOGE payments after Aaron published a poll on Twitter that saw 140,000 people vote on it, and 68.1% say it should “for sure” list DOGE.

The addition of Shiba Inu was decided after Aron published a second Twitter poll asking his followers whether the DOGE rival should also be accepted. 81.4% of the 153,000 people who responded noted SHIB should “for sure” be added as a payment method.

BitPay has notably also recently helped Australian energy firm 1st Energy start accepting cryptocurrency payments, including in both meme-inspired tokens DOGE and SHIB. BitPay was established back in 2011 and added SHIB support last year.

These development come shortly after leading digital payments platform Wirex, which has over 4.5 million users and allows them to spend dozens of currencies at more than 80 million locations worldwide, has also added support for SHIB.

Earlier this month the Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, has revealed that the Ukrainian government is now accepting donations in DOGE as it faces a Russian invasion.

All of these developments show that both meme-inspired cryptocurrencies have been seeing their utility explode over the last few months. As reported Mustafa Elitas, Deputy Chairman of the AK Party Group and Turkey’s Minister of Economy, is said to have met with members of the Turkish SHIB community to discuss the cryptocurrency’s adoption in the country.

AMC has finally added support for Dogecoin and Shiba Inu after months of anticipation

AMC Theatres, the biggest cinema chain in the world, has finally started accepting Dogecoin and Shiba Inu after teasing the communities behind the two leading meme coins for months.

The announcement was made by CEO Adam Aron on Twitter earlier this Thursday.

Aron gave a “special” shout-out to cryptocurrency payments processor BitPay, which made it possible to accept Dogecoin and Shiba Inu.

As reported by U.Today, AMC was originally supposed to add support for the two canine coins on its website and mobile app on March 19, but the addition happened more than a week earlier.

The movie theater chain ran Twitter polls to find out whether it should move forward with the integration of Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. After hearing a resounding yes from the communities, Aron said that his company had started working on enabling payments in those two cryptocurrencies.

AMC allowed its customers to pay for tickets and concessions with Bitcoin, Ethereum several other cryptocurrencies in November.

For now, Aron is not sure whether or not the cryptocurrency will play a major role in his business. As reported by U.Today, the 67-year-old executive recently told Fox News that he had to “wait and see” whether this would be the case.

More conventional payment methods, such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, currently account for over half of the company’s ticket purchases.

Aron floated the idea of issuing AMC’s own cryptocurrency back in November, but the plan is still up in the air.

The company has also dipped its toes into the non-fungible token space. In January, it gave away more than half a million “I Own AMC” NFTs to its shareholders.

AMC Theatres announced the acceptance of meme crypto coins such as Dogecoin and Shuba Inuusing BitPay, a crypto payment provider.

BitPay will be live for AMC online payments on our website by March 19, and live on our mobile apps by April 16, possibly a few days earlier,” tweeted AMC CEO Adam Aron on Monday.

In November 2021, AMC Entertainment Holdings, a unit of the popular movie theatres, began accepting Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin for payments.

AMC allows clients to purchase tickers and goods with the cryptos mentioned. Nevertheless, many AMC’s clients demanded Dogecoin and Shiba Inu as part of the accepter cryptocurrencies.

AMC CEO Adam Aron listened to the request. The first actions taken were the digital AMC gift cards. However, Aaron promised to adopt more versatility measures for both cryptos.

According to Adam Aron, on April 16 there will be full acceptance of Dogecoin and Shiba Inu on the mobile apps.

Pay For Your Next Movie Night at AMC Theaters With Dogecoin https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/06/pay-for-your-next-movie-night-at-amc-theaters-with-dogecoin/ https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/06/pay-for-your-next-movie-night-at-amc-theaters-with-dogecoin/#respond Wed, 06 Oct 2021 18:12:50 +0000 https://cryptocurrencypanther.com/2021/10/06/pay-for-your-next-movie-night-at-amc-theaters-with-dogecoin/

You can now take a date to the movies and pay for it with Dogecoin at AMC theaters. The popular movie theater chain announced that gift cards can now be purchased for crypto.

AMC CEO Adam Aron tweeted that the company would be accepting Dogecoin as payment for gift cards. While it’s not exactly the same as buying movie tickets with crypto, the end result is the same. AMC gift cards can be used to buy movie tickets along with online concessions. The company had previously announced its plans to expand crypto offerings to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash before the end of 2021.

The tweet from Aron states, “Huge news Dogecoin fans! As we work to accept online crypto payments, now you can buy @AMCTheatres digital gift cards (up to $200 per day) with Dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies using a BitPay Wallet.  Accepted on our website, mobile app, and in theatres.”

AMC committed to cryptocurrency

Aron and AMC have been talking about crypto a lot lately, especially on Twitter. In fact, a tweet is where the decision to adopt DOGE came about in the first place after an online poll. The poll, posted to Aron’s personal page, queried his followers as to whether the movie theater giant should accept dogecoin on top of the other major coins it had planned to incorporate. Of the more than 100,000 voters, nearly 70% were in favor of the move

In other recent news, Aron stated during a conference call that moviegoers would be able to buy tickets at AMC using bitcoin and that the IT systems needed to handle the transactions are already in place. During the same conference call, which centered around Q2 results, Aron added that Apple Pay and Google Pay will also be accepted in the near future. He added that AMC’s retail investors are “highly enthusiastic about cryptocurrency.”

AMC joins several other global brands that have adopted cryptocurrency payments including sandwich shop Quiznos and convenience store Sheets.

As of the time of writing, Dogecoin is up around 30% from the previous week to $0.26.
