Ethereum<\/strong> (CRYPTO: ETH) co-creator and Cardano<\/strong> (CRYPTO: ADA) founder Charles Hoskinson<\/strong> said Tuesday that the role of cryptocurrency in Afghanistan will be larger in the aftermath of the United States’ withdrawal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What Happened:<\/strong> Hoskinson made his comments on CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box\u201d program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“It is my belief that cryptocurrencies are going to play a larger role in Afghanistan this time around, in the war for and against the Taliban forces,\u201d said Hoskinson.<\/p>\n

In the same interview, Hoskinson also emphasized the importance of privacy in the wake of the Taliban\u2019s takeover of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis [the Taliban takeover] is a great example of when the rules change, you retroactively would like to make things you share publicly very, very, private.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hoskinson cited the example of posting a picture with U.S. troops and said, \u201cten years ago you wouldn\u2019t think anything about that in Afghanistan, now that is literally evidence that can be used to execute you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Ethereum co-founder hoped that this would spark an international conversation on privacy and the tools needed, which he said very closely related to \u201cour industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why It Matters: <\/strong>Scenes of chaos were witnessed in the aftermath of the Taliban\u2019s takeover of the Afghan capital Kabul on Aug. 15, as people frantically tried to withdraw their life savings<\/a> from banks.<\/p>\n

This, at the time, prompted comments from many in the cryptocurrency industry about the utility of coins like Bitcoin<\/strong><\/a> (CRYPTO: BTC) in such a situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some commentators also said that such a situation would not arise in the first place if governments had adopted decentralized money.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the month, Hoskinson said that Cardano was a \u201cbig believer in quality human rights\u201d<\/a> and would not build identity solutions in countries that have an \u201conerous record of very significant institutional violations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mathematician-founder of Cardano believed that such solutions could be abused by local authorities.<\/p>\n

Price Action:<\/strong> ETH traded 8.72% higher at $3,751.03 over 24 hours at press time while ADA traded 8.6% higher at $3.01.
