You can now take a date to the movies and pay for it with Dogecoin at AMC theaters. The popular movie theater chain announced that gift cards can now be purchased for crypto.
AMC CEO Adam Aron tweeted that the company would be accepting Dogecoin as payment for gift cards. While it’s not exactly the same as buying movie tickets with crypto, the end result is the same. AMC gift cards can be used to buy movie tickets along with online concessions. The company had previously announced its plans to expand crypto offerings to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash before the end of 2021.
The tweet from Aron states, “Huge news Dogecoin fans! As we work to accept online crypto payments, now you can buy @AMCTheatres digital gift cards (up to $200 per day) with Dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies using a BitPay Wallet. Accepted on our website, mobile app, and in theatres.”
AMC committed to cryptocurrency
Aron and AMC have been talking about crypto a lot lately, especially on Twitter. In fact, a tweet is where the decision to adopt DOGE came about in the first place after an online poll. The poll, posted to Aron’s personal page, queried his followers as to whether the movie theater giant should accept dogecoin on top of the other major coins it had planned to incorporate. Of the more than 100,000 voters, nearly 70% were in favor of the move.
In other recent news, Aron stated during a conference call that moviegoers would be able to buy tickets at AMC using bitcoin and that the IT systems needed to handle the transactions are already in place. During the same conference call, which centered around Q2 results, Aron added that Apple Pay and Google Pay will also be accepted in the near future. He added that AMC’s retail investors are “highly enthusiastic about cryptocurrency.”
AMC joins several other global brands that have adopted cryptocurrency payments including sandwich shop Quiznos and convenience store Sheets.
As of the time of writing, Dogecoin is up around 30% from the previous week to $0.26.
