📝 Project Overview 📝

Nimiq is a censorship-resistant payment protocol that is native to the web. The project is all about trying to break down the barriers preventing wider crypto adoption.

It has a focus on making things simple for regular users and merchants alike. Particular attention has been given to make user interfaces super easy to use and understand. This is pretty rare in crypto.

⚙️ Technology ⚙️

Other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum require your web browser to connect to a node to access the blockchain network. The problem is that most people do not have the hardware or know-how to set up a node. The result is that the vast majority of crypto holders are dependent on node operators to access the network.

However, with Nimiq your browser actually becomes a node. This means that Nimiq users cut out the middleman and this makes Nimiq exceptionally censorship-resistant.

It is these browser clients that make Nimiq native to the web. The result is that Nimiq users can use Nimiq with just a web browser with no lengthy or complicated downloads.

💰️ Token 💰

Nimiq has its own blockchain with NIM being the native token of the payment system. NIM is used as a store and transfer of value within the payment system and functions as digital cash.

2% of the token supply has been allocated to Nimiq Charity, which is focused on supporting projects with high ecological and social impact.

👨‍💻️ Team, Partners & Development 👨‍💻

The project was co-founded by Philipp von Styp-Rekowsky, Elion Chin and Robin Linus. They have backgrounds in blockchain engineering, Silicon Valley startups, open-source development and more.

The team is made up of around 20 highly qualified individuals with skill sets in UX/UI, communication, infrastructure, legal, SEO and blockchain engineering.

Robin Linus left the project in January 2019 after a disagreement over the direction of the project when it came to development and increasing marketing efforts.
